Vote for Efren Penaflorida

November 11, 2009

His story is a common one in the Philippines. A boy born into poverty, with nothing to hold onto but to strive to finish his education. I know that feeling, I’ve been in that situation in one point in my life. So everytime I hear someone struggling to financially support his/her studies, my heart bleeds for them as well.

But Efren Penaflorida’s story and his effort is nothing compared to what I’ve been through. He managed to even help other young people to overcome their struggle in getting an education. His oragnization - Dynamic Teen Company is a true inspiration in reaching out for the out of school kids in the slum areas in the Philippines.

He has proven that we all can be a hero. To help vote for Efren for the 2009 CNN Hero of the year, click HERE. If you’re feeling generous and wants to share the numerous blessings in your life, you can also try sponsoring a child through World Vision. :p

Baby Chronicles: It’s back again..

November 10, 2009

At 24 weeks (this coming Thursday), I am having another bout of morning sickness. I’ve been having three days in a row of morning sickness.  As in right after I eat, so I have to eat again when I get to work. And I thought I’m through it! Maybe it’s just my hormones acting up again. I’ve been feeling sleepy lately too. Every afternoon, I have to restrain myself from closing the door in my room at work and just doze off. Parang first trimester ulit pakiramdam ko. Oh well.. Konting tiis na lang and I get to see Baby Gab! :p

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

October 30, 2009

My first Christmas here in Australia was pretty much uneventful. It was memorable because it was the first Christmas Ned and I had together and as a married couple, but that’s it. We don’t have close family and friends here and we seriously, Christmas here is really boring. None of the “fiesta-like” celebration in the Philippines where it starts as early as September and ends in January.

But 2 weeks ago, the shopping centres here near our apartment has started decorating and selling Christmas decors. was actaully surprised to see the big Christmas tree near the mall. Maybe it’s just a marketing strategy to encourage people to spend earlier. Nevertheless, I liked it! I miss the Christmas spirit we Filipinos has gotten used to in the Philippines.

This year, our Christmas will be a quiet one at home, savoring the last one we’re going to be spending it all by ourselves, because next year hopefully we can spend it in the Philippines with our little Gab. It will be a quiet Chrismas for us but a more expensive one because we’re thinking of already buying baby things for the little one. We’re starting to focus on our child, not anymore on ourselves. Because really that’s what Christmas is all about - giving.

**************************

On a slightly diffrent note, I saw this from my friend Pat’s blog:

I like! I hope everyone can feel and be like one (a hero) especially now that Christmas is coming.

Baby Chronicles: Tips on how to stimulate baby’s development while still in the womb

October 26, 2009

I’ve read somewhere that if you read to the baby while he/she’s still in the womb, it will help alleviate feeding problems. So I bought a book for the baby which I can read every night to him before I go to sleep. I’ve also heard about this thing called Baby Plus which they said is a prenatal education system. An h yeah, I’ve tried listening to classical music (but I find it too boring) or hum or sing to the baby whenever I can (like in the shower..hehe..). Any more tips?

Maritess vs the Superfriends

October 22, 2009

I first saw this when I was in college. Laughtrip talaga! Hehe.. Enjoy!

Below is a transcription of the Maritess vs. the Super Friends video

Hello, my name is Maritess. I don’t want to say my last name. I want to protect my employers. This is hard for me. Uhm…I’ve been working for the Super Friends… for 18 months now. I don’t want to talk bad but I had to tell the truth.

They treat me bad here sometimes. I come from Zamboanga to work for the Super Friends. I saw an Ad that I said sure I’ll work for you, you’re superheroes.

Why the Australian experience is relevant to Filipinos

I got this from Peyups. It’s quite interesting how Aussies live and how it relates to them being a first world country and to the Philippines being a third world country. It is quite funny in a way but it makes you think huh?

Being Australian is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for A Belgian beer, then on the way home, grabbing an Indian curry or A Turkish kebab, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

Oh and….
Only in Australia…
can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Australia …
do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Australia …
do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a DIET coke.

Only in Australia …
do banks leave both doors wide open and chain the pens to the counters.

Only in Australia …
do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

NOT TO MENTION….

3 Aussies die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.

58 Aussies are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers.

31 Aussies have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.

8 Aussies had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper (jacket) with a lit cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Aussies were admitted to Emergency in the last two years after opening bottles of beer with their teeth.

and finally………

In 2000 eight Aussies cracked their skull whilst throwing up into the toilet.

Baby Chronicles: Reality

I’m back to work now. I’m glad that I am, I’m getting bored at home. My boredom went to the extreme of even getting addicted to Facebook’s Restaurant City! Seriously, the last three days I’ve been so into it, I have to keep checking my restaurant every now and then. I’m glad I’m (almost) over it. Hehe.. Now I’m back to reality (managing a cyber restaurant is a lot harder than I thought!).

I am also in my 20th week (going on 21st this week) and the idea of having a baby and being a mother is becoming more real to me now. Baby Gab’s been very active (kicking and somersaulting). The other day, I though the baby’s even trying to kick my stomach (I had this weird feeling of my stomach twitching when I woke up and every few minutes the whole day. The doctor said it might be my intestines and stomach adjusting since my uterus is getting bigger. At first it felt weird, like my insides were turning inside out. So I’ve started talking to the baby (especially if when he wakes me up in the morning and when I’m about to fall asleep) and encouraged Ned to talk to him too. I read somewhere it would help the baby recognize our voice when he’s out of the oven. :p

Click here for the baby’s development.

 4D Ultrasound of Baby Gab

Oh yeah, and I forgot to post this from 2 days ago. I finally got hold of my camera in time to take a photo of the hale storm that happened.

Hale at the driveway

It looks like this in close up:

 Fingertip sized hale

Ned even told me part of the roof in the hospital where he works collapsed because of this. Afraid no?!

Getting better

October 2, 2009

I don’t feel a 100% better yet, but I’m getting there. Hirap talaga magkasakit. And it’s harder when you’re pregnant because you can’t take just any over the counter medicines. Believe me, I’ve tried everything before I resorted to taking medicines. From lemon juice with honey, vicks sa paa (got this from Pat), lukewarm water with salt gargle, hot compress on the throat, everything! But this damn cough keeps on bugging me (especially in the middle of the night)!

I remember the last time I was like this was before I had my medical examination as I enroll as a freshman at the University Philippines Manila. I remember it so well because I was so afraid that they wouldn’t let me enroll when they find out how sick I am. My father even scolded me that if I never get to enroll at UP because of me being sick, I’ll have to enroll at a local college instead! Seriously, I really thought UP would reject me just because of a cough!

Anyway, thanks to all who’ve wished me well. The baby’s alright (I hope).  I can feel it moving more frequently now and it’s a relief when I feel it.  Everything that the doctors prescribed to me was all safe for pregnancy (all are in Category A in the Australian categorisation of drugs). And I’m having another ultrasound next week to check the baby’s development (and hopefully the gender, yay!). Balitaan ko kayo. :p

P.S. Oh yeah, I’m gaining weight too even though I’ve been sick! Happiness! :p

Sick.Sick.Sick.

September 29, 2009

I’ve been sick for more than one week now. I think the dust storm last Wednesday and Saturday aggravated my cough. I am now on antibiotics which the doctor said is perfectly safe for the baby. To entertain myself while trying to recover, Lalei told me about this website where I can watch Fillipino channels online live! So the past 3 days, I’ve been monopolizing our laptop trying to watch Kapamilya channels (loyal ako sa channel 2 e). I saw the news about the storm Ondoy. It made me think how lucky I still am and thank God, the place where my family and other relatives live was not affected. I hope and pray that the storm about to hit the Philippines tomorrow will not do more damage. I hope those pledges of donations (ang galing ni Kris Aquino manghingi sa sponsors!) will go to those who are most in need.

Ok, I gotta go. I’ll have to watch Wowowee before my husband comes home from work. He cannot tolerate Filipino shows especially the telenovelas. Wala sya magagawa, may sakit ako. I need my dose of Filipino shows to make me feel better. Hehe..

Baby Chronicles: The Softest Touch

September 25, 2009

They said it would be like bubbles, or a fluttery movement. But I felt it like someone softly nudging me. The baby’s movement that is. It started around when I was on my 14th or 15th week, gradually I felt it more frequently especially when I’m leaning forward or lying or sitting still. I’m on my 17th week now, and aside from these frequent “nudging” movement in my lower belly, I’m also having this annoying nose bleed. I didn’t have this even at the coldest of winter, so it’s just weird that I’m having it now and it’s not even winter!

P.S. Sabi pala sa babycenter, the baby’s the size of my palm na! :p

The reddest sky I have ever seen

September 23, 2009

I woke up this morning thinking there was a bushfire when I saw this outside:

The sky was so red! Well, not only the sky but it’s all red everywhere. Afraid! Kala ko nung una bushfire, but then I cannot smell any smoke. And then I thought baka magso-solar flare na at katapusan na ng mundo! Haha.. I was still too sleepy to turn on the TV, but not too much to grab my camera and take a photo. Hehe..

When I finally came to my senses, I watched the news and found out that there was a dust storm overnight somewhere in the southern Australia and because of strong winds towards NSW, it was carried here.  After the sudden hail storm the other day, now it’s dust storm. I hope wala nang susunod. These wild weather disturbances are really becoming more alarming. Scary!

On being a woman..

September 22, 2009

When we were in college, I saw this book in my husband’s (then boyfriend’s) book collection:

This is just one of the things that made him so interesting. I had the same reaction as when I saw this book among his collection. I though then, why would he want to read this book? So I borrowed it and read it (when you’re infatuated, you want to learn everything about your special someone, and this was my way of doing it - by borrowing his books..hehe). I didn’t really understood it then, but I find it quite interesting.

Now that I’m pregnant, I started reading it again and because I can relate to it now, I can understand it better. Natalie Angier wrote the book in an almost comical way, never attempting to bore the reader with all the medical terms she used. And the way she entitled each chapter, you really have to continue reading it just for the sake of understanding why she entitled that chapter that way. One of the chapters is entitled “Suckers and Horns: The Prodigal Uterus”. You have to read the book to find out why.

I didn’t expect I’d say this again but…

September 21, 2009

..I’m missing the rainy season in the Philippines. Yesterday afternoon, while I was cooking Bistek, it just suddenly rained with hail the size of my fingertips. I called my husband who was at the laundry room (Yep, he does the laundry for us. Hehe..) and we went outside. It was the size of my fingertips and I was so excited, I grabbed as many as I could but it immediately melted. I was hoping to get a photo of it, but before I can even get my camera, it was gone. I’ve been here for more than two years now but that was the first time I held something similar to a snow. I loved it!

When we went inside, the smell of Bistek cooking and the rain outside made me think of the Philippines. I was transported back to the the time when all you could is stay inside the house and watch TV and hope that there will be no classes the following day due to heavy rain. Oh well..It made me think of the Counting Crows’ Big Yellow Taxi lyrics:

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you got till it’s gone

So ang moral lesson ay: Huwag mag-reklamo pag umuulan! Yun lang pow. Bow! :p

Baby Chronicles: At 16 weeks

September 19, 2009

I bought this new DVD from ebay:

I used to do Pilates exercises before I got pregnant and now I feel like I really need to do it to regain my strength for when I go to labour (it’s not called labour for nothing I know) and in taking care of the little one after I gave birth. It says in the DVD I can do the exercises at 16 weeks, and I am on my 16th week now! Yey!

The little one is growing fast I know. It’s evident in my growing baby bump. I looked like a slim lady with a big stomach (more like a manourished woman actually). So good job on the little one for taking all the nutrients from Mommy. When I saw the midwife, I was actually worried that I wasn’t gaining any weight (I know, I should be happy right?) and maybe the baby’s not developing well. She said that the baby’s taking everything it needs from me and that it’s my body whose not getting enough nutrition. Probably because I’m still getting sick (morning and sometimes at night too!). But as long as the baby’s healthy, I can take anything. As long as the little one’s safe and developing well. I don’t care what Iook like. I am definitely becoming a mother. :p

Filipino versus Australian soap operas

September 18, 2009

The last two weeks, I’ve been contemplating if I should get TFC or Foxtel. But because I’ve been missing the exciting and colorful world of Pinoy telenovelas, I decided to just get TFC especially when I grow bigger and needs to stay home often. The soap operas here in Australia are bland compared to what we have in the Philippines. And even though the actors are hunky and blue eyed, I still prefer the Filipino actors with their chinito eyes and easy smile (John Lloyd, I love you!Hehe..).

Seriously, the storylines of the soap operas here ranges from someone getting married (it’s like every week someone has to get married!) to someone being adulterous and getting a divorce, and then getting married again to another woman whose a friend of his ex! I like how Pinoy telenovelas can be ultra dramatic and although sometimes you know what will happen, a twist will eventually happen to crumble your illusion of its predictability. I can actually suspend my disbelief while watching them and forget what’s happening in the real world. Maybe that’s why Filipinos are so addicted to them. Sometimes, all we need is to just forget.

******************

And while we’re on the subject of soap operas, I got this from Blogthings:

What’s Your Soap Opera Name?

Your Soap Opera Name is Gia Isabella Corbin

Isa kang hampas lupa Gia Isabella! Bagay! Haha..
