On being a woman..
September 22, 2009 When we were in college, I saw this book in my husband’s (then boyfriend’s) book collection: This is just one of the things that made him so interesting. I had the same reaction as when I saw this book among his collection. I though then, why would he want to read this book? So I borrowed it and read it (when you’re infatuated, you want to learn everything about your special someone, and this was my way of doing it - by borrowing his books..hehe). I didn’t really understood it then, but I find it quite interesting. Now that I’m pregnant, I started reading it again and because I can relate to it now, I can understand it better. Natalie Angier wrote the book in an almost comical way, never attempting to bore the reader with all the medical terms she used. And the way she entitled each chapter, you really have to continue reading it just for the sake of understanding why she entitled that chapter that way. One of the chapters is entitled “Suckers and Horns: The Prodigal Uterus”. You have to read the book to find out why. Here’s another review for this book: ” I learned three cool things about female biology by page 22, and I thought I knew a lot of biology from taking it in college. Did you know that a boy is 6% more related to his mother than his sister is? Or how about that men are more like women than women are like men? How can that be? Read the book. And the rest of the pages are similarly packed with surprising and nifty things you never learned about the life of double-X, perhaps because men mostly decide what is to be deemed “interesting” and “worthy of study” in biology. We didn’t even understand some of the most fundamental hormonal processes in the menstrual cycle until the mid-1990s. They just didn’t seem that important to male scientists (who don’t, of course, menstruate).” “I think women ought to read it, but men need it even more. While it is a big improvement that we can now buy books with frank, insightful, and even humorous information about femaleness, we’ve only come halfway if only women read them. I want my lovers to know just how power-packed my clitoris is. I want my sons to know that breastmilk is highly specialized sweat. I want George W. Bush to know how much he has his grandmother to thank for the structure of family values.” Hmmm..maybe this was why my husband was reading it back then. Because he has no idea how to deal with me! Haha.. If that’s the case, I should be flattered right? After being together for 8 years and being married for 3 years, I can say he wouldn’t be needing this book anymore. He’s a quick learner, my husband. He knows now what to say and what not to say to a woman, especially to a hormome enraged pregnant woman! :p
